Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has said the party will serve as a vigilant, principled, and peaceful opposition, holding the government to account while contributing constructively to national progress.
“Our movement has never been about a single election. It is about strengthening democratic culture, protecting citizens’ rights, and building a just and accountable state,” in a staement
t, he offered “profound respect” and expressed gratitude to the “countless volunteers and supporters who worked tirelessly over these months”.
He said, “Many of you gave your time, energy, and conviction. Some faced intimidation and harassment simply for exercising their democratic right. Your courage has strengthened our democracy.
“I know many of you are feeling hurt and deeply disappointed. That is natural. When you invest your heart into a cause, you feel its outcome deeply. But let me say this clearly: your efforts were not in vain. With 77 seats, we have nearly quadrupled our parliamentary presence and become one of the strongest opposition blocs in modern Bangladeshi politics. That is not a setback. That is a foundation.”
The Jamaat chief wrote, “History reminds us that political fortunes change. In 2008, BNP was reduced to 30 seats before returning to form a government in 2026, a journey that took 18 years. Democratic politics is a long road. Our path is clear: earn trust, hold power to account, and prepare responsibly for the future.”
He said, “In any genuine democratic journey, the true test of leadership is not only how we campaign, but how we respond to the verdict of the people. From the very beginning, we committed ourselves to a stable and functioning democratic order. That commitment remains firm. We recognise the overall outcome, and we respect the rule of law.”
Shafiqur added, “Our commitment to principled, peaceful politics remains unshaken.”
