Dr. Tariq Saleem, Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Punjab, criticized the recently passed bill in Pakistan’s Parliament setting 18 as the minimum age for marriage. Speaking at a Jamaat-e-Islami training workshop in Rawalpindi, he said Islam bases marriage on maturity and understanding, not age. He called the bill a violation of Islamic teachings and urged the government to consult the Islamic Ideological Council. He warned that such laws could create national discord and accused the government of promoting a Western agenda. Other party leaders also addressed the event, emphasizing the need for national unity.
